“Let us promote discussions to resolve the territorial issue rather than putting it off for later,” Abe told Putin, according to Japanese government officials who briefed reporters.
Putin said in response: “I want to remove all obstacles that stand before our two nations. I want to issue instructions to once again push forward talks for negotiating a peace treaty.”
Abe and Putin met for about 30 minutes on Thursday on the sidelines to the Group of Eight summit. They also agreed to cooperate for the development of the Russian Far East as well as Eastern Siberia.
Stalled negotiations over the status of the Northern Territories–the islands of Shikotan, Kunashiri, Etorofu and Habomai–have prevented the signing of a peace treaty between Japan and Russia.
